History
From 1989 – 1995, Aboriginal Elder, Author and Community Activist, Mrs Ruth Hegarty was instrumental in establishing and building two very successful programs through her active involvement with the Geebung Baptist Church.
- The Sunday School Program
- Vacation Care Program
This was at a time when Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families moving to the northside of Brisbane/Caboolture was growing at a steady rate and the need to support these families was becoming a priority.
As the Vacation Care Program started to develop its own cultural identity and purpose, the church handed the program over to Mrs Hegarty who then established the Indigenous organisation ”Binambi Barambah Aboriginal Corporation” (BBAC) registered under the then Aboriginal Councils and Associations Act. BBAC is a not-for-profit community based organisation that delivers a four day vacation care program incorporating activities that reflect the cultural and social aspects of Aboriginal people.
As the then Chairperson of Binambi-Barambah Aboriginal Corporation (BBAC), Ruth Hegarty accepted her rights and responsibility of continuing the program and developing it into its own entity through the efforts of her son Norman Hegarty and the Board of Directors
For twelve years, BBAC has provided countless experiences for young people who come back year after year for their Binambi-Barambah experience. The camps provide a holiday program for disadvantaged Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal primary school children aged between 7 years and 16 years. BBAC utilises the established campsites in South-East Queensland participating in all their usual vacation and camping adventures and incorporating traditional Aboriginal cultures and experiences such as traditional games, traditional songs and traditional stories.
