JUNIOR LEADERSHIP

Binambi Barambah 'Junior Leadership' Initiative

The Binambi-Barambah Aboriginal Corporation is building upon its successful camp program to include a “Junior Leadership” initiative that focuses on developing and strengthening the abilities of our young people to become effective leaders during the camp program and generally throughout their lives.  With corporate support from Price Waterhouse Coopers, Binambi will be conducting its first two-day workshop with our junior leaders in 2010 and if successful will continue to expand our services in this area.

Bitumen Dreaming Walk - Woodford to Cherbourg

A re-enactment of the walk from Woodford to Cherbourg by Aboriginal people of the Binambi Aboriginal Reserve in February 1905, took place between 25 June – 4 July 1993 .
In February 1905 the Aboriginal people from the Binambi Aboriginal Reserve were relocated to Cherbourg Aboriginal Reserve. Some were transported by train from Caboolture to Wondai and then walked to Cherbourg (11 km), while others walked overland from Woodford to Cherbourg (148km).

The “Living in Harmony” initiative enabled Binambi-Barambah Aboriginal Corporation members to plan and implement this walk involving ten (10) students: Kerry Malone, David Kyle (Aspley State High), Donny Bemrose (Burnside State High), Natasha Hegarty (Caboolture State High), Nathan Borg (Clontarf State High), Samantha Tevelen (Dakabin State High), Damian Chilhy (Morayfield State High), Trevor Koch, Carl Fisher, Chad Parker (Redcliffe State High) and Nathan Morgan (Wavell Heights State High) , Lennie Creed, Troy Hegarty and Robert Eyres.

The walk involved a series of meetings/get togethers/workshops in a number of locations along the way including Woodford, Kilcoy, Moore , Linville, Kingaroy and Cherbourg .
Many local identities both Indigenous and non-Indigenous shared their stories, local knowledge and interest in the project which culminated in the “Bitumen Dreaming” song and design.
The Bitumen Dreaming Project is a forerunner to the extension of the cultural enrichment camps to promote further understanding and reconciliation between all peoples.

Aunty Ruth Hegarty's Books

Ruth Hegarty won the 1998 David Unaipon Award for unpublished Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander writers with her entry "Is that you Ruthie?"

"Is that you Ruthie", is about life as a Cherbourg Dormitory girl and the tremendous friendships and hardships endured by girls of Ruthie's age and vintage.

"Bittersweet Journey" is the sequel to "Is that you Ruthie" and it's about leaving the Dormitory system to become a wife and mother. "Bittersweet Journey was written to be shared by everyone, especially those who have known personal tragedy or abuse; and those who seek an authentic account of Aboriginal experience in our time.
